Interview tips
Many applicants find the case study interview the most daunting part of the application process. So, to help you out, here are some tips as to what we are looking for:
- A structured approach to solving the problem
- Ability to handle quantitative analysis
- Creativity in generating solutions
- Communication skills
- General business knowledge and insight
It's always a good idea to be prepared for the interview, which could include:
- Attending university careers service mock interview sessions
- Practicing with people that you know in consulting
- Reading business publications, such as the FT or The Economist, to be aware of the latest business news
- Reviewing your CV, the interviewer may tailor the case to suit any employment background you have
Once you're at the interview, there are a few simple do's and dont's which you should follow during a case study:
- DO take your time to fully understand the case study; clarify that you understand what is being asked of you before you start
- DO ask questions; there is often pertinent additional information that the interviewer may not offer in their initial description of the case
- DO use the note paper; organise your thoughts and record important information
- DO apply a structured approach to the problem; focus on the most important issues
- DO simplify calculations where possible; round numbers to an appropriate level of detail
- DO answer the case study question; ensure that your conclusion answers the question asked - it is helpful to write the question at the top of your notes to prevent being sidetracked
- DON'T be afraid to make assumptions; simply make sure you explain your logic and reasoning to your interviewer
- DON'T wait for the interviewer to keep asking questions; drive towards an answer yourself
- DON'T be afraid of silence; take some time to compose yourself and think of a structured way to approach the problem
